Roaring Fork Valley Personal Injury Attorneys

PERSONAL INJURY LAWYERS · ROARING FORK VALLEY · COLORADO

The Roaring Fork Valley is one of the most geographically isolated populated corridors in Colorado. A single highway links every community from Glenwood Springs to Aspen — and when a serious accident happens on that road, there is nowhere else to go. Victims are treated at facilities that may be far from their homes. Families scramble to understand what happened and what comes next. And insurers, working from a playbook they have used thousands of times, begin limiting their exposure before the dust has settled.

Howry Breen & Herman, LLP represents people on the other side of that equation. Our attorneys handle serious personal injury and wrongful death claims throughout Pitkin, Garfield, and Eagle counties. We are based in Snowmass Village because that is where our clients are — not because it is convenient, but because proximity to this corridor matters when we are investigating a crash scene, talking to a local witness, or standing in front of a jury that knows this valley.

A Valley That Demands More From Its Roads Than They Can Safely Deliver

The Roaring Fork Valley has grown faster than its infrastructure. What was once a quiet mountain corridor now handles a sustained volume of commuter traffic, resort guests, construction convoys, delivery vehicles, cycling tourists, and seasonal workers — all on a single two-lane highway with no bypass, no redundancy, and weather conditions that can shift from clear to treacherous inside of thirty minutes.

Understanding why crashes happen here is not just academic. It determines who is legally responsible, what evidence needs to be gathered, and whether the negligence runs to a driver, a trucking company, a road maintenance contractor, or all three. The geography of this valley shapes litigation in ways that attorneys without local experience simply do not anticipate.

Some of the specific conditions our attorneys account for in Roaring Fork Valley cases:

  • Mountain grade transitions — long descents approaching Glenwood Springs place extreme demands on commercial vehicle braking systems. Deferred maintenance that might go unnoticed on flat roads becomes lethal on these grades.
  • A single-corridor bottleneck — with no alternate route, backups force aggressive passing maneuvers and create chain-reaction crash risks that do not exist on roads with detour options.
  • Rapid-onset weather — black ice, sudden snowfall, and dense fog at elevation can develop and disappear within the same mile. Standard stopping-distance assumptions do not apply.
  • Mixed-use conflict zones — the stretch from Basalt to Carbondale sees cyclists, pedestrians, delivery trucks, and high-speed commuter traffic competing for the same intersections with almost no physical separation.
  • Resort seasonality — the spike in unfamiliar drivers during ski season — rental vehicles, shuttle operators, first-time mountain road users — creates a measurably elevated crash window every winter.
  • Wildlife and low-light crossings — deer and elk crossings after dark throughout the valley floor generate emergency avoidance maneuvers that regularly result in secondary collisions and rollovers.

We Handle Cases Across the Entire Corridor

Personal injury cases in this valley do not cluster around any single community. Serious crashes occur in every ZIP code along the corridor, and the legal issues vary by location. Our practice reaches every community along CO-82 and throughout the surrounding county roads:

Glenwood Springs

The western anchor of the valley sits at the confluence of I-70 and CO-82, where commercial truck traffic from the interstate transfers onto a mountain highway not built to absorb it. The canyon approach from the west, the Grand Avenue bridge intersection, and the grades descending into town are among the most incident-prone stretches on the entire corridor.

Carbondale

A growing community where the highway narrows at the Highway 133 junction and pedestrian volumes at the Crystal River roundabout create year-round conflict between foot traffic and through vehicles. Construction activity has elevated commercial truck presence on residential streets adjacent to the highway.

El Jebel and Basalt

The commercial density between these two communities generates a high frequency of left-turn accidents, cyclist conflicts, and speed-differential collisions where drivers slowing to access businesses are rear-ended by through traffic moving at highway speeds. This stretch produces more injury claims per mile than its posted speed limits would suggest.

Willits and Emma

Wide shoulders and higher posted speeds create conditions that feel safer than they are. Cyclists and pedestrians use these shoulders regularly, lighting is limited, and the speed differentials between vehicle classes are at their greatest here. After-dark incidents in this segment frequently involve catastrophic injuries.

Snowmass Village and Brush Creek Road

Resort construction cycles bring heavy equipment and delivery vehicles onto roads with geometry designed for passenger cars. The Brush Creek roundabout handles disproportionate ski-season volume with restricted sightlines. Owl Creek Road has generated a pattern of serious collisions at its CO-82 intersection that merits aggressive investigation in any case arising nearby.

Aspen

Downtown Aspen concentrates resort-season traffic — including a spike in impaired driving incidents — into a pedestrian-heavy street grid. The S-curve approach on CO-82 channels high-speed through traffic toward intersections with poor pedestrian visibility. Delivery and construction vehicles serving the resort core regularly operate on streets they were never designed to accommodate.

What We Handle

Our attorneys focus on cases where injuries are serious, liability is contested, and the stakes are high enough to demand trial-ready representation from the first call. That includes:

  • Motor Vehicle Accidents - From highway rear-end collisions to head-on crashes on the narrow two-lane segments east of Carbondale, motor vehicle accidents on CO-82 and surrounding county roads form the core of our valley practice. We investigate beyond the police report — pulling vehicle data recorders, CDOT road condition records, weather service data, and any available surveillance or dashcam footage to establish a complete picture of what happened and who bears responsibility.
  • Truck and Commercial Vehicle Crashes - Commercial vehicle cases involve a different legal framework and a different class of defendant than ordinary car accident claims. Carriers, fleet owners, shippers, and maintenance contractors can all share liability. Federal hours-of-service rules, vehicle inspection requirements, and cargo securement standards create a paper trail — but only if it is requested before it disappears. We move immediately after a serious truck crash to secure the electronic logging data, driver qualification records, and maintenance history that determine whether a case is worth pursuing and against whom. Learn more on our truck accident page.
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Collisions - The growth of recreational cycling in the Roaring Fork Valley, combined with the Rio Grande Trail network and increasing pedestrian activity at corridor intersections, has produced a steady pattern of serious cyclist and pedestrian injuries. These cases often involve questions of road design, driver inattention, and inadequate signage that go well beyond a standard negligence claim. We handle these cases with the same depth of investigation we apply to commercial vehicle matters.
  • Wrongful Death - The families of people killed in Roaring Fork Valley accidents face a legal process that begins immediately and involves opposing parties who are already represented. We handle wrongful death claims from the first conversation — preserving evidence, identifying all liable parties, and building the case that reflects the full economic and human cost of what the family has lost.

What Distinguishes Trial Lawyers From Settlement Firms

The personal injury legal market is saturated with firms that process claims in volume and settle quickly. Those firms serve a purpose for minor injuries with straightforward liability. They are not the right choice when injuries are catastrophic, liability is disputed, or the defendant is a trucking company with a seven-figure insurance policy and a defense team on retainer.

What changes the math in high-value injury cases is whether the plaintiff’s attorneys are genuinely prepared to take a case in front of a jury. Insurance companies evaluate claims in part by assessing that risk. A firm with a documented trial record — hundreds of jury cases, verdicts that have set records, national recognition from peer organizations — signals something different to a defense adjuster than a firm known primarily for quick settlements.

That is what Howry Breen & Herman, LLP brings to the Roaring Fork Valley. Our attorneys have tried over 250 jury cases collectively. They have obtained verdicts recognized by the Texas Verdicts Hall of Fame. They hold board certifications and peer ratings that represent the top tier of the plaintiff’s bar. And they are here — officed in Snowmass Village, reachable by the communities they serve, and familiar with the corridor where these cases arise.

Recovering the Full Cost of a Serious Injury

Insurance companies are skilled at presenting settlement figures that sound substantial but fall short of what a serious injury actually costs over time. Future medical care, long-term rehabilitation, lost earning capacity, the cost of accommodating a permanent disability, and non-economic damages for pain and diminished quality of life are all categories that defense adjusters routinely compress.

Our attorneys understand what catastrophic injuries cost — not just in the first months, but over a lifetime. We work with medical specialists, vocational experts, and economic analysts to quantify the full scope of damages before any settlement discussion begins. The types of injuries we most commonly see in serious Roaring Fork Valley accident cases include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries, including those initially dismissed as mild concussions
  • Spinal cord damage and partial or full paralysis
  • Orthopedic injuries requiring multiple surgeries and extended rehabilitation
  • Crush injuries, amputations, and permanent disfigurement
  • Severe burns from vehicle fires
  • Psychological trauma, including PTSD following violent collisions
  • Fatal injuries and wrongful death

Speak With a Roaring Fork Valley Personal Injury Attorney

If you were injured in an accident anywhere along the Highway 82 corridor — or anywhere in Pitkin, Garfield, or Eagle County — we will review your case at no charge and with no obligation. We take serious injury and wrongful death cases on a contingency fee basis. There is no upfront cost, no hourly billing, and no fee of any kind unless we obtain a recovery for you.

The sooner we are involved, the more we can do. Evidence disappears. Witnesses become harder to reach. Electronic records from vehicles and commercial fleets are overwritten. A call today does not commit you to anything — but it may preserve options that will not be available later.
