New Task Force Created to Regulate Pharmacies
After a series of accidents that have occurred as a result of pharmaceutical negligence in Texas, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy has announced they will be creating a task force in order to help regulate compounding pharmacies.
Compounding pharmacies differ from regular pharmacies in that they mix and produce their own drugs for patients, which can include injections, infusions, and eye drops, if sterile, and non-sterile drugs like creams, powders, and pills.
A History of Negligence
The news of a task force comes after several instances of pharmaceutical negligence occurred last summer. Our attorneys filed a lawsuit against Stonegate Pharmacy in May on behalf of Lorena Lopez-Gonzalez, who almost died when she was given a mis-compounded medication. The medication was compounded in a dose that was more than 50,000% greater than it should have been.
Our personal injury lawyers filed another lawsuit against the same pharmacy in July, this time representing a Leander woman who was injected with a B-12 shot compounded at the pharmacy that had a pH level of over 13.2, when it should have been between 6.5 and 7. The substance contained as much pH as liquid drain cleaner, and the chemical left her with a large hole in her upper arm.
Since 2014, Stonegate Pharmacy has received citations for 7 code violations, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has filed 2 inspection reports against the pharmacy.
A task force would help to come up with regulations and training for inspectors in an effort to protect the public from more cases of negligence in the future. However, one issue is that it can take years for the State to investigate and take any action against a pharmacy.
