About Taylor v. Oncor
Our client, James Stacy Taylor of Graham, Texas, was concerned about an Oncor-owned power line that ran across his property and was often struck by branches that fell off nearby trees. After reporting the safety hazard several times, he was eventually told by Oncor to trim the branches himself. In an attempt to trim the branches to stop a potential electrical fire that could endanger him and his neighbors, Mr. Taylor was shocked, burned, and rendered quadriplegic.
Howry Breen & Herman, LLP was called to represent Mr. Taylor in his lawsuit against Oncor. The electric company tried to blame him for violating Texas law that prohibited people from maintaining power lines on their own despite Oncor directly telling him to do just that.
After a two-week trial, the jury found that Oncor’s defense was insufficient and that it had negligently allowed Mr. Taylor to put himself in danger instead of taking responsibility for its own power lines. Jurors returned with a $53,965,000 award, which would ultimately secure a “Top 100 Jury Verdicts” 2023 award for Howry Breen & Herman, LLP and Attorney Sean Breen.
